Bangkok, Thailand CNN —On the surface, Thailand’s annual Songkran festival appears to be just one great big water fight. Pipad Krajaejun, a history lecturer at Bangkok’s Thammasat University, says it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly when the water fights became such a key part of the festival. (We’ll share more on the water fights below.) Some towns limit the water fights to one day, so be sure to check ahead if you’re planning to join the battles. Soe Zeya Tun/ReutersAmong the highlights of the festival is the Maha Songkran Parade, which will happen on April 11.

The photograph tells us nothing about whether or how these children are related. Hundreds of Israeli hostages, including children, are believed to be held in Gaza by Hamas, their families desperate for their safe release. It is a rare thing for mainstream news organizations to publish graphic images of dead or wounded children. There is nothing quite so devastating as the image of a child whose life has been snuffed out by senseless violence. And so the slaughter in Maine reminded me of another image from Gaza, one you may have seen on social media.

Social listening refers to monitoring your social media for customer feedback and industry trends. Social listening isn't easy, but small-business founders say it's worth your time. Here, two small-business owners explain how social listening benefits their companies. Sharma and Arias handle most of the social listening for their companies, with help from their small teams and the tools available within social platforms. "It's very manual," Arias said, adding that her customer-care consultant helped with day-to-day social listening and responding to comments and DMs.

In the United States, the families are expected to seek resettlement under the "Priority 1" refugee program. The activists were not imprisoned, but had been barred from leaving Vietnam. The officials would not identify any of the four people, citing diplomatic and security sensitivities, but the two ex-prisoners' names are known. Vietnam is holding at least 159 political prisoners and detaining 22 others, Human Rights Watch said earlier this month. Biden administration officials pushed for the exit visas as an additional step during final negotiations over the joint statement and trip logistics, according to one of the U.S. officials.

Read Your Way Through Hanoi

Read Your Way Around the World is a series exploring the globe through books. Hanoi has always been a city of tales and legends. Cradled by the silky Red River, Hanoi is also a city of loss and survival: It was destroyed time and time again during the French Indochina War, then the Vietnam War, when thousands of tons of bombs were dropped onto the city. But once in Hanoi, you will feel the energy of a city that constantly renews itself. If you prefer to get to know Hanoi via fiction, “Dumb Luck,” by Vu Trong Phung — a sarcastic novel set in Hanoi during the colonial period — is considered a classic of Vietnamese literature.

Acting Australian Prime Minister Richard Marles said Chau Van Kham was released on humanitarian grounds and “in the spirit of friendship” between Australia and Vietnam. The Vietnamese government declared the California-based Viet Tan, or Vietnam Reform Party, a terrorist organization in 2016, accusing it of recruiting and training armed operatives. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese traveled to Vietnam last month to mark 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. “We share the happy news that Mr Chau Van Kham is well and has returned to his family today,” the statement said, according to Amnesty. Pearson said Kham was one of more than 150 political prisoners detained in Vietnam for peaceful acts of free expression.

In a first, India gifts active warship to Vietnam

NEW DELHI, June 28 (Reuters) - An active duty missile corvette of the Indian Navy is on its way to Vietnam as a gift, the first warship given by India to any country. India and Vietnam have strengthened their ties in recent years, with a special focus on defence, as both countries are concerned over an increasingly assertive China. India has given smaller boats and military equipment to countries like Maldives and Mauritius in the past and a submarine to Myanmar. But the corvette for Vietnam is the first time India has given a warship to a Chinese neighbour with a coast on the South China Sea, where several countries have overlapping territorial claims. The warship was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1991 and has been designed and produced within the country.

China offers closer military cooperation with Vietnam
  + stars: | 2023-06-27 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
BEIJING, June 27 (Reuters) - China is willing to work with Vietnam to strengthen high-level communication and cooperation between their militaries, Chinese Defence Minister Li Shangfu said on Tuesday as he met his Vietnamese counterpart. Li told Phan that relations between their militaries had developed well, adding that China's military was willing to push relations to a new level. The U.S. navy visit comes amid tension between China and the United States in the South China Sea, most of which China claims, as the two powers jostle for influence in the energy-rich region. Li, appointed defence minister in March, is under U.S. sanctions over his role in a 2017 weapons purchase from Russia's largest arms exporter. As tensions simmer in the South China Sea, where several countries have overlapping territorial claims and also hold military exercises in its waters, any thaw in Sino-U.S. military relations is being closely watched.

HANOI, March 17 (Reuters) - Police in Vietnam on Friday arrested a Facebook user who authorities accuse of "attempting to overthrow the state" by sharing content that defamed leaders of the ruling Communist Party, its security ministry said. Despite sweeping economic reform and increasing openness to social change, Vietnam's ruling Communist Party retains tight media censorship and tolerates little criticism, with dozens of people jailed for speaking out against authorities. Nha was also accused by police of joining and recruiting members for the U.S.-based "Provisional National Government of Vietnam", a group listed by the Vietnam as a "terrorist organisation", though not by the United States. The organisation, which could not be reached by Reuters, has previously pledged loyalty to the now defunct state of South Vietnam. Several people have been jailed in Vietnam accused of recruiting for the California-based group.
Having a business partner you are personally close to can be a huge benefit, they said. Torsten Pieper, an academic at UNC Charlotte, told Insider that twins having distinct roles in a business can be beneficial. Research from the Institute for Family Business showed companies that promote themselves as family-run can gain greater trust and are better placed to attract talent. Phan said family businesses inherently care about their communities, because their identity is often attached to the community where they work. As long as we're together, that's greatAll the twins said their businesses have changed the nature of their relationships.
Michelle Phan uploaded her first YouTube video in 2007 and continues to keep an eye out for up-and-comers. Her current favorites include travel vlogger Bald and Bankrupt and fashion critic Mina Le. While few creators can lay claim to remaining relevant roughly 15 years after uploading their first video, Phan has endured. They run the gamut from a seventeen-year-old horror filmmaker, to fashion and culture critics, to a first-person travel vlogger that Phan likens to YouTube's version of Anthony Bourdain. "I have a good ass algorithm," Phan tells Insider.
Tim Cook got the honor of waving the checkered flag at Formula One's United States Grand Prix Sunday. People across the world of F1 were quick to roast for his apparent lack of enthusiasm however. "Possibly the worst checkered flag-waving in Formula One history," one prominent commentator said. Cook became the latest in a long line of well-known figures to signal the end of an F1 race by waving the checkered flag, joining the likes of David Beckham and Serena Williams. Sky Sports commentator Ted Kravitz also chimed in, calling it "possibly the worst checkered flag-waving in Formula One history."
Some influencers will start building relationships with brands by cold-DMing them on social media, like Instagram. While some influencers pitch PR reps or influencer-marketing contacts on LinkedIn, Lazerson goes straight to the top by DMing CEOs.
